Guidelines for Assigning Gender

DRAFT 2019-09-19 - Do not publish before approval.

  • Gender is not a core or required attribute, and should not be inferred based on a name or photograph. Assumptions about gender should be avoided since these can be subjective and potentially harmful. Honoring a person's right to privacy should take precedence over recording this information.
  • SNAC recommends following the Report of the PCC Ad Hoc Task Group on Gender in Name Authority Records (2016) https://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/documents/Gender_375%20field_RecommendationReport.pdf for the best practices in recording gender in a SNAC record.
  • For living and non-living persons, a source must be cited  to support the gender recorded in the SNAC record.
  • Gender is a repeatable field which can be assigned date ranges as needed.
