Attend an Event

Commonly, our events are centered around a cooperative and educational mission in the form of SNACSchool, but occasionally there are other opportunities like Edit-a-thons, group discussions, demonstrations, panels, and more! Our members are welcome to share SNAC-related public events with us and we will link to them in our calendar below (you can find planned SNACSchool sessions at the calendar below as well).

On this page, you'll find more information about various SNAC workshops outside of the scope of our SNACSchool program. These may include Edit-A-Thons, OpenRefine workshops, and more.

IndigenizeSNAC Edit-A-Thon

Hybrid

November 14 | 11 am – 5 pm EST

Hosted at the Library at the Smithsonian American Art Museum
750 9th St NW, Washington, DC — Metro accessible! Gallery Place-Chinatown station on the red line

In conjunction with the opening day of the ASIS&T Annual Meeting in Crystal City, VA, this edit-a-thon is open to ALL SNAC Editors and Trainers, but will have an Indigenous focus and objectives relating to technical and editorial projects (e.g., expansions and implementations of thesauri and controlled concepts modules). The aim is to improve discovery of Indigenous archival material dispersed across repositories, and to explore best practices around entities in SNAC for Indigenous and First Nations individuals and Nations, as well as colonial actors and institutions. (CA25078)

Popularized on platforms like Wikipedia, an edit-a-thon is an event where a group of people work together to edit and improve online content. These collaborative editing sessions can be held in-person or online, sometimes include basic training for new contributors, and often focus on a specific topic, such as Indigenous entity description, women in history, or topics related to a particular institution like an archive. In SNAC, editors can come together to edit in a collaborative effort, and our edit-a-thons are usually centered around a common theme.

Our Edit-A-Thons are pre-certified by the Academy of Certified Archivists as Archival Recertification Credits! Edit-A-Thons may also be used for credit! If you are a Certified Archivist and will (or have) attended one of our classes below, you can use the code in parentheses at the end of the description when recertifying to automatically fill in details about the program. (Standard: CA25078 | Indigenous: CA25079)

Become a Member

The cooperative model of SNAC means that we depend on researchers, both with and without professional archival or library experience, to make our records more accessible and to improve description.

Archivists and librarians get the opportunity to work with community members, enhance descriptive practices, and promote their collections beyond geographic barriers. Researchers get integrated access to cultural heritage resources and the opportunity to advocate for their research and their communities by keeping archivists and librarians informed.

There are many different types of membership options that support the above and allow for professional, organizational and tribal partnerships, the ability to participate in working groups, and opportunities for professional development and continuing education!

If your institution or project is interested in becoming a member, see additional information using the button below or contact snaccooperative@gmail.com.
