Welcome to SNACSchool!
Trained members of the SNAC Cooperative offer training on how to use SNAC for research and reference, and dives deeper from there into authority control and archival description, creating and editing SNAC records, and training for members who want to becoming SNAC Faculty!
SNAC instructors are archivists and metadata experts and many have contributed to the development of the course materials.
Training is often offered remotely, but onsite training can be requested or may be scheduled in conjunction with national or regional professional meetings. Training can also be arranged on-site at member institutions. All requests or questions about SNACSchool should be sent to snaccooperative@gmail.com.
New to Archives?
Our Archives 101 series is an "FAQ-style" rapid fire series to demystify some of our jargon archival concepts that may not be common knowledge. The link below is helpful to keep on hand during your SNACSchool adventure in case you have any questions, but we always encourage questions during live SNACSchool sessions as well!
Course Catalog
There are THREE SNACSchool Courses:
- Reference & Research: intended for those wanting to learn how to use SNAC for research and for instruction; takes about 2 hours. (Standard: CA25074 | Indigenous Version: CA25075)
- Create & Edit: geared towards those who will be editing in SNAC). Class spans 2 days, about 3 hours each day. (Standard: CA25077 | Indigenous Version: CA25076)
- Train the Trainer: an “A to Z” instruction for all phases of planning and executing SNACSchool. Participants will have had to have taken the Create and Edit modules to successfully enroll.
Our SNACSchool "Research and Reference" and "Create & Edit" courses are pre-certified by the Academy of Certified Archivists as Archival Recertification Credits! Our Edit-A-Thons may also be used for credit! If you are a Certified Archivist and will (or have) attended one of our classes below, you can use the code in parentheses at the end of the description when recertifying to automatically fill in details about the program.

Spring 2026!
This series is part of a Mellon funded grant in which we are unveiling SNACSchool 5.0 and will be employing Indigenous methodologies to create an Indigenous centered version of SNACSchool. The structure has been revamped and shortened, and we have made many aspects of SNACSchool asynchronous and are hoping to develop a fully asynchronous version of SNACSchool as well.
